About Platelet Rich Plasma

Blood plasma is a blood component functioning as an extracellular matrix for the blood cells, when being concentrated from blood, it is a yellow liquid substance. Another component is Platelets, containing in blood that functions in blood vessels clogging, which in return helps in stopping bleeding. These platelets are a living body with its own property of wound healing through coagulation and having many growth factors. These are found in blood, believed to have greater strength in rehabilitating wound than in blood circulation.

These platelet rich blood plasma could be harvested or cultured into an injectable serum having greater growth factors and healing properties, majorly the platelet derived growth factor (PDGF), vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and many other bioactive proteins. This injection therapy is widely used for internal wound healing, bone marrow transplantation and many more ailments in medicine including growth promotion in miniaturizing hair.

PRP Treatment For Hair Restoration

The autologous procedure uses the extracted platelets from patient’s own blood plasma by taking more or less 100mls of blood firstly from the patient’s vein and then spinning it in a centrifuge, which is added with platelet collagen and activators. This process isolates the solid platelet rich plasma from liquid blood, further making into a serum, filling it in a spray or syringe that is later sprayed onto the scalp or injected under local anesthesia.

This therapy of PRP for treatment of hair loss is designed to be a 8-9 months course initially with 4-6 weeks interval and after 9 months it could be performed once in a year for maintenance. With the help of this hair loss treatment a larger number of patients have noticed a reduction in their hair thinning by the 2nd or 3rd month, which though varies from person to person.

PRP is well used in conjunction with hair transplant for stimulating newly relocated hair grafts from shock loss. It helps in repairing any dryness or trauma in the hair grafts and also promotes hair growth against telogen effluvium, a significant complication associated with surgery of hair restoration.

Indications For Treatment

PRP hair loss treatment is ideal for diffuse and patterned hair thinning, which works by stimulating the existing miniaturizing hair, however it does not help in hair growth promotion on bald scalp like that of hair loss medications claims too. For full coverage of bald scalp, the only valid option for restoration of hair is by hair transplantation.

It is not suitable for patients with any earlier medical history of scarring alopecia or viral infection due to infections or even for those taking blood thinning drugs.

What Are The Chances Of Complications?

The procedure is generally harmless and safe, with almost no risk or complications associated and anyone can undergo this procedure. Infection can be at a considerable risk with a minimal possibility, which differs from patient to patient. Ineffectiveness can be a considerable negative potential for various reasons, including irreparable genetic baldness, or the type of hair loss, or any other physical illness.
