Key facets of hair transplantation surgery

Hair Transplantation is a process of hair restoration for patients affected by baldness. Though baldness causes no physical hazard or pain, it’s a matter of psychological worry for many. FUT and FUE are two dominant procedures of hair transplantation implemented on patients, the latter being a little more in practice currently.

BODY:

Like health and youth we take a thick and dense hair cover on our scalp to be granted. But, it’s until those are gone. Though youth once gone cannot be brought back, the scenario is a little different in case of hair. For a lot of people hair transplantation procedures can actually bring back a denser and fuller hair. The hair transplantation was introduced long back in 1950s but has gained a major popularity only since 2000s.

Initially only the FUT or Follicular Unit Transplantation procedure was used for hair restoration. The process involves removing a narrow strip of scalp from the back of the head. This particular strip acts as the donor strip. The hairs on the strip are resistant to genetic baldness. The strip is used to fill an area having thin or no hair. For transplantation the surgeon first cleans the scalp and injects local anesthesia to numb the region from where a 3-4inch strip of scalp will be removed.

A scalpel is used to remove the strip of scalp. The surgeon keeps it aside to sew it closed. Once the sewing is done, the area gets instantly concealed due to the hair cover around it. The hair transplant surgeon can promptly estimate the number of follicular grafts that can be obtained by dissecting the donor strip.

The same number of follicular units can be used to cover a specific portion of the bald area irrespective of the patient’s actual hair density. The patients having high hair density can suffice the number of follicular units in donor area.

However in case of patients who have low hair density, a little compromise has to be made. In that case the process is guided by follicular hair constant. If the surgeon applies the same number and spacing of follicular units on a low hair density patient as he does in case of a high hair density patient, the transplantation will still be successful. The patient perhaps will get a thinner look, but will permit proper preservation of donor hair for future procedures.

The more advanced hair transplantation technique in vogue is FUE or Follicular unit extraction. It’s only a 1mm needle that is used for this procedure. This small round punch is applied to extract follicular units from a patient’s bald resistant donor areas one at a time. These 1, 2, 3 and 4 hair groupings called follicular unit grafts are then transplanted in the patient’s balding areas.

Due to the lack of linear scar and the lesser invasiveness of FUE procedure, it has gained greater popularity over strip harvesting practiced in Follicular Unit Hair Transplantation or FUT.

Harley Hair Clinic, one of the most well known clinics in London, provides both the traditional FUT as well as the more advanced FUE processes to the patients. The hair transplantation surgeons of the clinic go through a number of sessions with the patients, who are looking forward to hair restoration before finalizing the date and time of the surgery.
